The Art of Extraordinary Simplicity

A playful twist on the Indonesian word for ‘ordinary’, BIASA is anything but. Founded in Bali in 1994 by designer and art gallerist Susanna Perini, BIASA is independent international label known for luxury resort-wear.

Deeply inspired by Indonesian heritage and Italian minimalism, our design ethos transcends clothing – offering cultural expression, beauty, and sustainability as a lifestyle. Each collection for women, men, and children honors originality, bold artistic expression, and innate craftsmanship.

Our 30-year journey of Extraordinary Simplicity has celebrated creativity, inclusivity, and artistic spirit. We’ve cultivated a global community of free spirits, thoughtful travelers, and bon vivants – those who choose beauty, purpose and life beyond convention.

Bold yet subdued, extraordinary yet subtle;
our exploration of understated elegance is endless.

Understated Elegance Defined

Our signature style is timeless, sophisticated, and free-flowing; perfectly suited to tropical landscapes. We find beauty in restraint: clean lines, airy natural fabrics, experimental textures, and a playful approach to silhouettes, all shaped by a desire to create.

Beneath this simplicity lies extraordinary detail inspired by Indonesian heritage and craftsmanship; batik, ikat, stitching, weaving, embroidery, appliqué, plant-based dyeing techniques, and more, made by hand, hidden in plain sight, waiting to be discovered.

Bold yet subdued, extraordinary yet subtle, we push boundaries, all while maintaining a deep respect for traditional artisanship. We thrive in a luxury that speaks softly - circular, responsible, and deeply intentional.

Our exploration of understated elegance is endless.

Made in Bali

Our foundation is deeply rooted in the immensely rich culture and traditions of our island home, Bali, and the Indonesian Archipelago. Our desire to create is intertwined with our desire to preserve the long-standing heritage of traditional arts and crafts, music, customs, and beliefs passed down through generations.

For over 30 years, our studios, workshops, and production houses have grown into sanctuaries of creativity where artisans, weavers, dyers, and designers work side-by-side – guided by the vision of our founder, Susanna Perini.

A family-owned label, we craft with compassion and profound respect - for people, place, heritage, spirituality, and the mastery of the handmade.

Our stores and galleries in Bali and Jakarta offer refuge from the noise of mass consumption – spaces of meaning, beauty, and connection.

Making a Difference

Over the years, BIASA has remained deeply committed to giving back to the island that has given us so much. We support several non-profit organizations and individuals whose work is creating meaningful change in Bali.

Among them is the Matahari Terbit Center (MTC), a foundation dedicated to caring for children with cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, and other disabilities. Our partnership with MTC goes beyond monthly donations—we also proudly offer a selection of handcrafted jewelry made by the remarkable young souls at the center.

Each piece, including the Cinta Kasih bracelet pictured here, carries a story of hope and empowerment. Proceeds from these sales go directly to supporting MTC’s inspiring mission.

You can find these pieces at BIASA stores. To learn more, please visit www.mtcbali.com.

A Voice for Contemporary Artists

Founded in Bali in 2005, BIASA Art emerged as a natural extension of Susanna Perini’s enduring passion for Indonesian contemporary art. At a time when contemporary art had little visibility or support in Bali, BIASA Art played a pioneering role—introducing and uplifting voices from Indonesia and beyond.

With galleries in Bali and Jakarta, BIASA Art has collaborated with leading institutions including the National Gallery of Indonesia, MACRO Rome, the Delfina Foundation in London, and the Indonesian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. These partnerships sit alongside a rich program of independent exhibitions and residencies, where artists are invited to create, explore, and exhibit in complete freedom.

Today, BIASA Art continues to evolve – nurturing emerging Indonesian and Balinese artists, particularly those exploring the dialogue between art-making and materials— echoing BIASA’s rooted connection to textiles and traditional craftsmanship, and through collaborative exhibitions at its galleries, now regarded as key platforms for contemporary art in Bali.

BIASA Art remains a living space of exchange, discovery, and creative freedom—bridging Indonesian voices with global conversations in contemporary art.

More than 30 years on, Susanna’s work is a living dialogue between art, fashion, and craftsmanship.

Our Founder

From a young age, Susanna Perini was drawn to the language of beauty – an inheritance as much as an instinct. Born into a family of couturiers in Italy, her early world was shaped by fabric, form, and craftsmanship. While assisting in her mother’s prêt-à-porter atelier, she studied anthropology and worked as a fashion photographer – seeking to understand not just how things were made, but why they matter.

In 1987, a photography assignment for Donna magazine brought her to Bali for the first time. The island spoke to her spirit. What was meant to be a visit became a beginning. Moved by its rhythm, beauty, and spiritual depth, she stayed, she listened, she created.

In 1994, she founded BIASA, a brand born from intuition and experience. A decade later, in 2005, she founded BIASA Art in support of her love for Indonesian contemporary art.

More than 30 years on, Susanna’s work is a living dialogue between art, fashion and craftsmanship.  BIASA has grown into an internationally celebrated name, with eight boutiques in Bali and Jakarta. BIASA Art has become an established voice in the contemporary art world, in Indonesia and internationally.

At the heart of it all is Susanna – still deeply present, still guided by care. Her vision uplifts artisans, safeguards traditional Indonesian techniques, and offers space for contemporary voices to rise. Her work bridges worlds— past and future, ceremony and daily life, devotion and design.

In 2017, her dedication to Indonesian arts was honored with the Knighthood of the Order of Merit by the President of the Republic of Italy.  Now a naturalized Indonesian citizen, Susanna continues to live by the values she embodies—creativity, compassion, and reverence for the cultures that shape us.
